Village Industries to Reach New Avenues for Sourcing of Handicrafts and Spices

A team comprising 12 members has already been set up, which will tour various parts of India and will identify villages that have a potential of being promoted through the company’s marketing channels. The team will start from the southern states like Kerala and Karnataka, where a majority of spices are produced. India has always been known for its unique and flavorful spices, which are used in cuisines all over the world. The company will find villages where spices are grown in significant quantity, and collaborate with the farmers to help them reach an international customer base.
Moving on, the company will explore the western states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan, which are popular for ethnic jewelry, footwear, cotton and silk garments, pottery, block printing, tie and die, glass enameling, leather goods and miniature painting. Due to the dexterous workmanship, the products earn good prices in the national, as well as international market.
For handicrafts made of bamboo and bell metal, the team will explore the eastern states of West Bengal, Orissa, and Assam. The states from east like Tripura and Manipur are the most unexplored, and the company intends to include them in its list of handicraft suppliers. Lastly, the team will visit northern states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.
Village Industries sells its products through fairs and exhibitions that are held in different parts of the country throughout the year, as well as through Government approved stores. It has a revenue sharing model under which a large part of the profit is distributed amongst the artisans so that they get a fair return. The team is expected to complete the tour in a year.
