Social media adds another dimension not only to a company’s e-commerce activities, but to its communication processes for both customers and employees.

According to a report from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, most Fortune 500 companies now have a social media presence.

These findings affirm the growing role Facebook, Twitter and other sites have in the operations of large companies.

“Social media is not just for personal usage,” said Kendall Matthews, director of marketing at Appointment-Plus enterprise appointment scheduling software. “It’s become an important marketing and communication tool for corporations and large businesses in all industry sectors.”

“Social media adds another dimension not only to a company’s e-commerce activities, but to its communication processes for both customers and employees.”

The report shows that 77 percent of Fortune 500 companies are active Twitter users; 70 percent are active on Facebook; and 69 percent keep a YouTube account.

Companies with the highest number of Twitter followers include Starbucks, Google and Whole Foods, while Starbucks, Walt Disney and Coca-Cola have the most Facebook fans.

Still not convinced? Here are three reasons why effective social networking can grow your company.

1.    It grows sales.

Amassing a large base of fans and followers lets you directly message discounts to consumers already interested in your product. Offering ‘exclusive’ specials can turn them into repeat customers, boosting overall sales.

2.    It’s an effective marketing tool.

Many consumers will visit a company’s Facebook or Twitter page before its Web sites. This is especially true of younger buyers.

An engaging social media program boosts your brand and online presence.

3.    It creates a personal connection with customers.

Social media creates a “face” for the company and fosters a personal connection between the brand and its customers. This helps attract new customers and keeps current customers loyal.

Positive customer interaction also gives companies a competitive edge in the marketplace.
