On August 2, Flavor Your Life, a European Union funded campaign, explores how influential olive oil has been in Mediterranean countries and how it continues to influence popular diets.

The origins of the olive oil plant are not definite, but it is clear that olive oil is linked to early civilizations. Believed to be rooted in the Mediterranean area, the olive oil plant spread quickly from Anatolia and Egypt to the islands of Cyprus and Crete. From here, the olive oil plant traveled throughout the area to eventually reach all of the Mediterranean countries.

According to Greek mythology, the city of Athens was built with the roots of olive trees. The Goddess Athena was believed to have won the contest over who should look over the city by creating the olive tree to provide a precious juice used for health and beauty.
