Criminal charges alone don't restore anything to the victim. What the wife and family are facing right now is unimaginable.

A man was killed and his wife seriously injured when their vehicle was struck by a speeding SUV in a hit-and-run last week as reported in WSVN (7.23.13). While police are still searching for the driver responsible, Miami car accident lawyer Michael Steinger says it's only a matter of time until the person is caught – and that they've made their own situation much worse by fleeing.

Witnesses say the silver SUV that caused the accident was speeding so much that other cars had to swerve out of its way. The SUV hit the victims' car at an intersection, apparently impacting the driver's side according to WSVN (7.23.13).

The WSVN article also reported that the man driving the car died immediately. A witness said his injured wife tried to shake him awake as the SUV sped away. One witness tried to follow the vehicle but couldn't keep up, estimating its speed as, “120 mph in a 40 zone.”

“This is why civil law exists,” said Steinger, co-founder of the Steinger, Iscoe and Greene law firm and an advocate for victims of reckless drivers. “Criminal charges alone don't restore anything to the victim. What the wife and family are facing right now is unimaginable.”

Steinger says hit-and-run drivers rarely get away for long.

“Police are combing the area and have already spotted one silver SUV with front end damage,” he said. “If that's not the one they'll find more. What could have been explained as an accident by the SUV driver has now become a blatant crime.”

Police say that anyone with information on the driver can anonymously call 305-471-TIPS, and may be eligible for a reward.

“In the days ahead, I hope the family speaks with a lawyer,” Steinger said. “There is no reason they should have to pay for medical expenses, damages, or final costs out of their own pocket. The guilty party should pay.”
