Dr. Frank Sparacino can now give patients a less intimidating alternative to conventional periodontal surgery with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). This laser gum surgery is less invasive than traditional surgery, and it offers benefits that no other gum disease treatment currently does.

Many patients have been deterred from conventional gum surgery because it can be painful and often requires a longer recovery period. Traditional surgery inevitably involves the cutting and loss of healthy gum tissue, and the folding and suturing of the remaining gum tissue. LANAP does not harm any healthy tissue. The gum disease treatment is performed with the Periolase MVP-7, a laser that operates at a wavelength that does not hurt healthy gum tissue, teeth, or bone. When Dr. Sparacino performs LANAP, he can remove gum disease without undesirable side effects. The Periolase MVP-7 even has a positive effect on bone - it stimulates regeneration and growth.

Often, Dr. Sparacino can remove all a patient's gum disease in just one treatment session. After taking a measure of how deep the patient's gum pockets are, Dr. Sparacino begins using the laser to remove the gum disease. The laser also loosens buildups of tartar, so the next step Dr. Sparacino takes is removing the tartar with a different tool. The procedure concludes with Dr. Sparacino stimulating blood to flow and clot at the bottom of the gum pocket with the Periolase MVP-7, creating a protective barrier.

In the event that patients need additional treatments beyond LANAP, the procedure still improves oral health and makes any subsequent procedures more likely to succeed. However, laser gum surgery is a very effective way to decrease the risk of teeth being lost. It not only removes periodontal disease, but also keeps healthy gum tissue in place to stabilize the teeth, and helps teeth and bone stay well attached by stimulating bone regeneration.

Patients suffering from periodontal disease who may have hesitated to have conventional surgery should seek treatment from Dr. Sparacino. Treating periodontal disease early can prevent a wide variety of health complications in the future. Patients can visit Dr. Sparacino's website to learn more about LANAP, or call his office to set up an appointment.
