Tobacco Road Golf Course Makes Top 100 Courses in the World as Voted by Golf Course Architects
Sanford, NC (PRWEB) August 05, 2013 -- In the Home of American Golf®, where the greats have played and the greatest course architects have designed championship courses, one course has been recently honored as one of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the world as voted by golf course architects in the July 2013 issue of Golf Course Architecture, the global journal of golf design and development.
Coming in at number 50 is one of the area’s newer layouts, Tobacco Road located in Sanford, NC, not far from the site of the upcoming 2014 U.S. Open Championships. Designed by Mike Strantz in 1998, the course challenges almost everything a golfer thinks about a golf course. And clearly, golf course architects recognize and honor the design work of Mike Strantz.
Carved from a sand quarry, the course has a feel of the Wild West with canyon-like obstacles enhancing the view along fairways. Those fairways will give any legs a good workout with many elevation changes. That said, the course is still very playable and Tobacco Road attracts players year round and from around the globe. It is one of the must-play courses in the Sandhills for anyone who enjoys the game of golf. Robin Hiseman of European Golf Design explained why he voted Tobacco Road as his number one course. “There are several very creative contemporary golf architects recognized on my list, whose egos really don’t need stroking. Creative and imaginative they may be, but Mike Strantz was all that and a genius to boot.”
