Announcement: GuitarControl.com Teaches Powerful Rock Rhythm Guitar Playing
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 04, 2013 -- To help guitarists master rock style rhythm guitar playing, GuitarControl.com released an instructional video that covers techniques for how to play power chords. In the video, available now on YouTube, Los Angeles based session guitarist Jon MacLennan demonstrates the technique and timing new guitarists can practice to play a distinctive Green Day rhythm using a basic chord structure.
Power chords are a critical building block for many new guitarists. A power chord is a shortened form of a bar chord in which only the first and second notes of a full bar chord are played. This two-note chord structure can be played anywhere on the neck, and produces a rich sound even when played at a frenzied pace. This makes power chords a staple in the songs of fast playing punk acts like Green Day, the Ramones, Bad Religion, and others.
“I call Green Day the power chord kings,” MacLennan says.
Using a basic Green Day inspired progression of power chords as an example, this rhythm guitar lesson shows guitar players the strumming patterns he uses to play rhythm and melody using power chords. MacLennan plays through distortion to give the effect rock and punk rock power chord playing can produce in a loud, live setting.
To practice and master this rock style rhythm, guitarists can click the link in the video description to access sheet music and tabs that diagram which notes to play for the chord progression shown in the lesson.
MacLennan demonstrates how to alternate between muted and open power chords to play a typical rock rhythm. “Muting” strings is done by putting pressure on the base of the string with the strumming hand while playing, preventing them from sounding fully when struck. The guitar lesson shows new guitarists how to play muted power chords that when played through an amplifier, and especially when played through distortion, can be played to great effect.
Jon MacLennan designed the Fast Track Guitar System, a 3-disc instructional DVD available through Guitar Control. In the Fast Track Guitar System, he expands on the basics covered in the YouTube video to teach advanced techniques for playing blues, rock, folk, and many well known guitar anthems.
