Access to internet sites and services can be restricted for any of several reasons. A government may disallow access to a site because the content is deemed politically or culturally subversive. Then there are local area connections, in workplaces for example, which block sites that are seen to be a distraction or inappropriate. Lastly, many sites themselves do not permit visitors from foreign countries to access their pages.
Whichever type of block is encountered, there are three types of proxy technology which can swiftly and easily circumvent the restriction.
Proxies are remote computers that allow the user to access the internet from a new location. The following is an introduction to each.
A Web Proxy Online. This free proxy resembles a search engine, but instead of entering a search term, you paste in the URL of a blocked site or page. The proxy retrieves the content and displays it on the proxy site, where you may interact with it as normal. These proxies are simple to use and ideal for occasional unblocking tasks. However, they can be slow when serving multiple users simultaneously and occasionally encounter problems in redisplaying complex sites on their page.
A Free Proxy IP List. Proxies can be accessed directly through your browser by entering the IP address and port number of the proxy server into your browser’s network settings. These IP proxies are less prone than web proxies to compatibility and censorship problems. They are accessed via proxy lists which additionally display useful information such as proxy speed and anonymity level.
VPN servers. The elite of proxy technology: a software-driven service which allows the user to easily switch their internet to new points around the world at high speeds. The main advantages of a VPN is that the technology carries all data of all internet programs, not just the browser, making it the most powerful of unblocking tools. As VPN users in China have shown, it is practically impossible for censors to geographically restrict this technology.
