The Discovery House Recognized as a Sponsor for 2013 Reseda Relay for Life
Reseda, Calif. (PRWEB) August 06, 2013 -- The Discovery House is pleased to announce its participation in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, which took place June 8-9. The event, which was held at Reseda's Cleveland High School, was a 24 hour fundraiser for the support of cancer survivors and research and awareness of the disease. In a special awards ceremony, the American Cancer Society acknowledged and thanked the Discovery House, which was a Bronze Level Sponsor, and all its event supporters.
The Reseda Relay for Life event consisted of 25 teams, 337 participants, and several sponsors. Together, those involved with the event raised over $41,000. The Discovery House provided not only monetary sponsorship, but volunteers from the Los Angeles rehab center also helped with set up for the event.
The Relay for Life theme was Rock 'n Roll, featuring live music all day. Participants formed teams that together spent a full 24-hour walking around the school's track. A Memorial Luminaria Ceremony was held in the evening. During the ceremony, candles were lit inside hundreds of white bags, honoring those who have fought or are still fighting cancer.
The American Cancer Society's mission states that it is a "nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service."
Relay for Life is an annual event that is held in neighborhoods across America. The purpose of the events is to help celebrate the lives of those who are fighting cancer and remember those who have battled the disease, as well as support research and create awareness for the disease. Participants have a variety of reasons for joining the cause, often in memory of someone they have lost to cancer or in celebration of a loved one who has survived the disease.
