Airtimes Launches on the App Store; Harnesses Crowd Data to Give Travelers Airport Wait Times

Airtimes, a new iPhone app that crowd-sources and shows airport wait times, is now available for download in the App Store. It's free.

Airport security lines are growing longer, but with Airtimes, a new app for iPhone, travelers can view average checkpoint wait times at airports across the country so they’ll know what to expect when they travel.

Will it be rush hour at the airport? Will the wait at security be more like five minutes or 40 minutes? It could mean the difference between making or missing a flight. Airtimes provides simple charts showing checkpoint wait times at the time of day when travelers head to the airport, and a timer that lets them submit their own wait times with just a few taps.

“The goal is to reduce the anxiety of going to the airport. We’ve all been surprised by how long the line is when we get to the airport,” said Jerome Chen, creator of Airtimes and a former management consultant and frequent flyer. “I can’t always go to the airport three hours ahead of time, but if I know it’s rush hour there, I’ll budget in more time. If I know it’s not a busy time, I’ll feel comfortable cutting things a bit closer.”

This is the first time this information has been available to travelers in a straightforward, easy-to-read format. Although Airtimes doesn’t provide live information, it does continuously update wait times based on user input, so they are a good indicator of what actual wait times will be.

Travelers can download Airtimes in the App Store on their iPhones now. It’s free.
