Announcement: New Rhythm Strumming Lesson from Guitar Control
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 06, 2013 -- Guitar Control, the leader in web-based instruction and comprehensive DVD-based courses, announces the release of "Rhythm Guitar Lesson: Chord Progression in the Style of Kings of Leon" the latest in their series of free instructional videos that are available on YouTube.
Kings of Leon, the internationally acclaimed, Grammy winning, American band from Nashville, Tennessee, has a unique sound. Their signature is a driving rhythm -- a heady mixture of Rock and Blues that is derived from their Southern roots, but has developed, undoubtedly due to their early success in Europe, into a mature melding of several other musical genres.
In "Chord Progression in the Style of Kings of Leon," John MacLennan explores how the Followills produce that dynamic rhythm through the combination of a driving eighth-note strumming pattern, superimposed on the distilled 4-string voicing of simple barre chords.
MacLennan begins by explaining how the basic E-based barre-chord-shape of the first position Fmajor can be whittled down into a more powerful voicing. He brings the shape up to the the eighth fret (a C chord) and demonstrates how by muting the higher strings, the chord becomes more powerful. In his words (echoing the architect Ludvig Mies Van der Rohe): "Sometimes, when you play less, it ends up sounding bigger."
Note that these are not "power chords" in the strict sense of the term, but they are indeed powerful. That C chord devolves into a C over E and the progression then travels down to that first position F. This simple chord progression comes to life when the eighth-note strumming pattern is applied, reproducing the driving rhythm of the Kings of Leon.
This easy to master lesson opens the path to dynamic rhythm playing, a goal for almost every guitarist.
A highly respected session musician, the LA-based John MacLennan has recorded with such stars as Julian Lennon and Steven Tyler, composed music for films and television, and has produced three albums, including the 2013 release "Songs From Box Canyon." In addition, MacLennan is an accomplished educator, having held a private guitar instructor's chair In the Department Of Music at Los Angeles Pierce College.
