In 1864, the HL Hunley, a man-powered submarnine, left port in the Charleston Bay with eight soldiers and a mission to sink a Yankee ship. The sub and crew vanished. The sub was raised and brought ashore in 2000 and now being examined and restored in a special water tank. Riendeau’s new song titled, HL Hunley (The Coin), commemorates the150th anniversary in February of 2014, the Hunley's last voyage.
Russ Riendeau, an indie recording artist with Global Journey Music and founder of Eyecatcher Press Music, first learned about the Hunley over 15 years ago. He was intrigued about one soldier’s lucky gold coin he carried, a gift from his girlfriend. When archaeologists discovered coin inside the hull, Riendeau was inspired to write a song and tell the story with music. “When I saw the gold coin, now 150 years later, I was captivated. The song wrote itself.”
Both the mystery and myth around the Hunley's disappearance nearly 150 years ago, have inspired many movies and National Geographic specials over the years. Guitar Gumbo, Riendeau’s latest album, features the HL Hunley song and other American History-themed music.
Kellen Correia, executive director of the Friends of the Hunley supports the conservation and future museum efforts. All proceeds of album sales on the Friends site go to support the project. "Russ' song captures the mood and period feel that tells the story in a very emotional way,” says Mrs. Correia. "It's amazing how sadness and the joy can be conveyed in a simple song.”
Guitarist, keyboard player and artist, Riendeau composes a wide genre of music for film, documentaries, health care facilities and corporate use. His music also addresses current events and emotionally charged topics in the public eye. “Russ’ unique and diverse music captures a strong international audience and fits our catalogue of world music perfectly,” says Rus Withers, Global Journey Music USA president.
