AlertSystems Respond to Comments from Petrol Retailers Association
(PRWEB UK) 7 August 2013 -- The Petrol Retailers Association has called for the government to take more action against fuel thieves rather than leaving the problem to local police commissioners reports the Daily Telegraph on August 4 in their report ‘Petrol chiefs slam ministers over fuel theft 'epidemic'’.
The paper reports that one forecourt operator claims the level of drive-offs has almost doubled in the past year.
Mr Madderson told the Daily Telegraph: "Fuel theft has reached epidemic levels. I have one member who says it has almost doubled and others are reporting big increases.
"Retailers can do as much as they can, write down number plates, install CCTV but the police are saying that before they enter it into their records as a criminal office we have got to prove evidence of criminal intent by the motorist. That's near impossible.”
AlertSystems have responded to the news and comments:
“Petrol theft is a growing problem within the UK, partly due to rising prices, but there are some measures garages can take to try and offset the problem. By installing HD CCTV they will be able to gather better visuals on those on the forecourt to monitor their behaviour and gather clear identifiable images if they make off without paying. It is also advised to install an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) System which can will record the number plate registration from every visitor and provide a better way of tracking any thieves once they escape.”
