Home Utilities Index

1. Highest bill: Houston, TX at $231.75
2. Lowest bill: Los Angeles, CA at $38.11
3. Largest Month over Month (MOM) increase: Las Vegas, NV from $132.65 to $206.46
4. Largest MOM decrease: Seattle, WA from $89.58 to $87.75

The city with the highest bill for July was Houston, TX at $231.75. This is typical for Houston, as the summer season is in full effect and temperatures usually reach the 100’s in July. This trend will continue throughout the summer season as Houston will fluctuate between the high 90’s and 100’s. The greatest increase in monthly bill was Las Vegas, NV, from $132.65 in June to $206.46 in July. This large increase was due to the long stretch of high 100’s Las Vegas endured for most of July.

As in June, Los Angeles, CA once again had the lowest bill at $38.11 in July. Los Angeles will continue to provide the lowest electric bill throughout the summer especially since the southern California temperature rarely fluctuates. Seattle, WA saw the greatest decrease, which was a decrease of $1.83 compared to its June average bill. Even during the summer, Seattle maintained mildly cooler temperatures than the rest of the country helping decrease the average electric bill.

1. Highest bill: New York, NY at $35.56
2. Lowest bill: Orlando, FL at $10.79
3. Largest MOM increase: Phoenix, AZ from $14.50 to $15.55
4. Largest MOM decrease: Washington DC from $28.82 to $27.61

As we saw last month, New York, NY once again had the highest natural gas bill at $35.56 in July. Indianapolis was a close runner up at $31.12. This is a normal trend from a year over year perspective and will only continue throughout the summer.

As in June, Orlando, FL once again had the lowest natural gas bill at $10.79 in July. This is primarily due to temperatures remaining in the high 80’s for most of the month, reducing the need for natural gas. The southern states will continue to see a huge decline in their natural gas bill as temperatures rise dramatically in the summer and remain consistently hot for the majority of upcoming months.

The city that saw the largest month over month increase was Phoenix, AZ, from $14.50 to $15.55. This increase was not significant; however, it still managed to remain just under the median as far as the natural gas bill goes. The decline of natural gas bills will continue as the majority of the country maintains hot temperatures.
