The migration of K–12 public education to digital classrooms is accompanied by a wave of new technology solutions. Without intervention, various solutions from hardware and software companies and multi-state consortia may not be compatible. Working to ensure that students, teachers and administrators realize the full benefit of this new technology, Pacific Metrics, working with federal, state and private stakeholders, has assumed a leadership role in defining future interoperability standards and was recently recognized for these contributions by the EdTech community.
Interoperability standards are designed to support schools that in turn require multiple complex software systems to work together to adhere to strict confidentiality laws around student data and records requirements. Pacific Metrics employs experts in data interoperability and supports schools’ needs by investing these resources in development of software that uses the Accessible Portable Item Protocol (APIP) standards. Senior software engineer Michael Aumock was recognized by the IMS Global Learning Consortium for his contributions to development of these standards at the 2013 Learning Impact conference in San Diego.

We can save states and districts considerable integration costs and hassles by adopting a common set of standards for all technology providers. Aumock began his involvement with IMS Global in July 2012, where IMS and Pacific Metrics assisted in the development of interoperability standards for the PARCC assessment consortium, Pacific Metrics and IMS successfully provided insight and direction to the implementation of interoperability standards in software development activities and current assessment programs. Aumock’s work in the area of interoperability standards helped the consortium further their mission “to advance technology that can affordably scale and improve educational participation and attainment.”
