Red Shirt Entertainment Announces Partnership with Nuyorican Poets Cafe
New York, NY (PRWEB) August 12, 2013 -- Following a successful 2012-2013 season in which Red Shirt Entertainment experienced substantial growth, the New York-headquartered production company is announcing that it will now serve as the official theater resident at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York’s East Village, located on 236 East 3rd Street.
“The company has experienced sold-out crowds for its last several performances,” said Red Shirt Producing Artistic Director Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj,” Partnering with a dynamic institution like the Nuyorican was a necessary next step to accommodate the increasing number of audience members and the direction we want to go as a company. We look forward to a progressive, long-lasting relationship with this historical and prolific organization.”
Red Shirt, which has already presented work at the venue, including a captivating performance of Vickie Tanner’s Running Into Me and the deeply moving Little Rock Nine Project, will also play an integral role in the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Nuyorican. Founded in 1973, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe’s mission closely aligns with that of Red Shirt. Both organizations have been built on a foundation of giving a voice to artists of diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, while participating in the non-profit sector, as well. This past month, the city of New York provided the Cafe with a new $6.3 million capital grant to renovate the building, aiding the continuation and nurturing of new works and emerging artists.
“We at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe are thrilled to join forces with Red Shirt,” said Daniel Gallant, Executive Director of the group. “They approach art and management in a forward-thinking, multi-faceted way that is a great fit for the Cafe’s mission, culture and legacy. I am happy to say that our 40th Anniversary celebration this September will also mark the coming together of two dedicated and charitable entities.”
Tentative upcoming Red Shirt events slated to take place at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe include the next installment of Red Shirt’s highly successful Remembrance Project; the world premiere of Defacing Michael Jackson, a compelling coming-of-age piece based around a rural African-American community in Florida; and the company’s “Salon Scene Nights,” which will allow members of the industry to view Red Shirt’s ensemble.
“As Red Shirt Entertainment has progressed, our work has reached a new scale while word about it has continued to spread to some notable organizations,” said Red Shirt Executive Producer Frank O’Brien. “In the Nuyorican we have found a partner who not only shares our values, but will help us develop further as an artistic entity and a business.”

About the Nuyorican Poets Cafe
Over the last 40 years, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has served as a home for groundbreaking works of poetry, music, theater and visual arts. A multicultural and multi-arts institution, the Cafe gives voice to a diverse group of rising poets, actors, filmmakers and musicians who have not yet found consistent havens for their work. The Cafe champions the use of poetry, jazz, theater, hip hop and spoken word as means of social empowerment for minority and underprivileged artists. Our community of spectators, artists and students is a reflection of New York City's diverse population; Allen Ginsberg called the Cafe "the most integrated place on the planet.”
