Young Life Williamsburg Launches Fundraising Shoe Drive to Raise Funds, Support Microenterprise in Developing Nations and Help the Environment
Williamsburg, VA (PRWEB) August 14, 2013 -- Young Life Williamsburg is conducting a shoe collection drive until September 30 to raise funds for camp scholarships for local high school kids while also benefiting microenterprise ventures in developing nations and keeping old shoes out of local landfills. Individuals can help by donating at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1677 Jamestown Road, or at collection boxes located throughout Williamsburg.
In the US alone, approximately 630 million pairs of shoes are thrown away per year. The materials used to manufacture a pair of shoes are created from chemical compounds, the kind that will create health hazards if left to disintegrate openly or in landfills. By donating old shoes to the Young Life Williamsburg Shoe Drive, what would have gone into landfills will be given a second chance to make a difference. All donated shoes will be redistributed through microenterprise partners and used in developing nations for impoverished people to start, maintain and grow an enterprise to feed, clothe and house their families.
“We are very excited to be conducting this shoe drive in Williamsburg, notes Trina Garrison, Young Life Williamsburg Committee member, "This campaign will raise funds that directly benefit Young Life and students in Williamsburg by providing much-needed funds for camp scholarships. The additional advantages of this effort prevent shoes from filling landfills, create commerce through micro enterprise, and sustain peoples’ lives, making this a win-win-win for everyone,” said Garrison. "Our goal is to collect 30,000 pairs of shoes and the only way we can do that is if people in Williamsburg rally together, so I am inviting everyone in our community to gather up their unwanted shoes and bring them to one of our collection boxes."
Shoe donations can be made at Grace Covenant and at collection boxes in the following locations:
Grove Christian Outreach Center, 8800 Pocahontas Trail
Sugar & Spice Consignment Boutique, 6536 Richmond Road
While gently worn shoes are preferred, shoes will be accepted in all conditions. Individuals, businesses and organizations that would like to participate in the shoe drive or host a collection box may contact Trina Garrison by phone at 221-8061 or email younglifeshoedrive(at)gmail(dot)com.
