Helping the Helpless with AKSHAYA TRUST through Indiegogo
(PRWEB) August 17, 2013 -- The Akshaya Trust was created by Narayanan Krishnan in 2002 to help and assist the mentally disabled homeless, as well as the senior homeless citizens of Madurai. Krishnan, once an award-winning chef, surrendered his dream job at a five-star hotel in Switzerland and returned to Madurai in order to help and aid his people.
He began by serving food to the homeless on the streets of Madurai. Soon after, he wanted to provide, not only food, but also shelter to the less fortunate.
With the help of his father, Narayanan purchased a small piece of land at Kodimangalam, in the outskirts of Madurai city. Over the years, with donations, he was slowly able to purchase 3.2 acres of land and begin construction of the Akshaya home.
In 2010, CNN noticed Krishnan’s work and stepped in to assist Krishnan get help from around the world, by honoring him as a CNN Top Ten Hero. The exposure helped Krishnan complete the construction of the Akshaya home.
On May 9th 2013, Akshaya Home was inaugurated. In just two short months, Akshaya has been filled with 400 deserving residents.
There are more seniors and mentally disabled homeless people needing help on the streets of Madurai, and in order to enable Akshaya to host them, additional space is needed.
With the 3.2 acres already purchased, there is an additional ¾-acre of available space, on which Akshaya began construction on July 27th 2013 for the second set of dormitories.
Akshaya needs assistance in raising the $300,000 to complete this construction. To accomplish this goal, there is a campaign at indiegogo.com - http://igg.me/at/akshayaUSA/x/3445870 .
Funding this project, and saving the many mentally disabled and senior homeless in Madurai, will take the generosity and caring of as many supporters as possible that are able to help. An anonymous donor has also agreed to pledge a donation of $15,000 if Akshaya is able to raise the same amount toward their goal of $300,000.
