New Mobile App, OUT!, Creates Platform for Visibility and Support Amongst the LGBTQ Community
Boston, MA (PRWEB) August 14, 2013 -- On the heels of the groundbreaking DOMA decision and the elimination of Proposition 8, there is now a way for members of the LGBTQ community, and their allies, to share and provide support to one another through the use of a mobile device. The OUT! App is now available for download in the iTunes store.
The brainchild of Tanya Tsikanovsky and Tommy Sondgroth, the new app provides an opportunity for gay and transgendered individuals to create their own videos, limited to 45 seconds each, which tell their unique stories and experiences. Using the app, people have the opportunity to create videos to use as a tool during the coming out process. Users can also express support for one another, or just share moments that are pivotal to their journey, such as a pride parade experience, or a wedding. The OUT! app is also a distinctive platform for heterosexual LGBTQ allies to connect and show support for the gay community, in an effort to promote activism and equality.
The app was created after Tsikanovsky initiated the Come Out Campaign—a movement to help gay individuals come out, particularly through the use of social media. The campaign, as well as the app, are designed to promote visibility in the gay community, in order to promote inclusiveness and eliminate barriers to equality.
“To say that we are excited is an understatement. We cannot wait to have a space to continue sharing with and engaging others in being visible for equality, for people's personal stories to inspire others to share theirs,” said OUT! Creator, Tsikanovsky. “We hope that all of you, allies alike, will use the app, that you will find the support and the courage to come out, that you will ally with those individuals who feel alone in their hometowns, and that soon, no one will be able to say, "I don't know anyone who's gay," because we all will.”
OUT! Is not only a way to share stories, but also to build and strengthen support systems that include members of the gay community, as well as their allies, all taking place in a safe environment.
