The McKinney Chamber of Commerce Hosted a New Teacher Welcome Breakfast Featuring Keynote Speaker Johnny Quinn on Aug 14
McKinney, TX (PRWEB) August 15, 2013 -- McKinney Independent School District teachers, administrators, board members, community leaders, the McKinney Chamber of Commerce and member businesses began the 2013-2014 school year with excitement and promise for the future on August 14 at this year’s Breakfast.
Jodi Ann LaFreniere Ray, President and CEO of the McKinney Chamber of Commerce, opened the annual program, welcomed Representative Scott Sanford, who gave the invocation and thanked Presenting Sponsor, Medical Center of McKinney.
Ernest C. Lynch III, Chamber Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Medical Center of McKinney, acknowledged the school district for the work they do and recognized the importance of the service that McKinney’s outstanding teachers and administrators provide.
Community member, father and school board President Curtis Rippee thanked the Chamber and spoke of the lasting impact teachers leave on the world because of their dedication to our children.
McKinney High alumni Johnny Quinn, a member of the U.S. National Bobsled Team and an Olympic hopeful for the winter Olympics in 2014 in Sochi, Russia was Keynote Speaker at the Breakfast. Quinn shared his experience as a McKinney graduate and said that while he was training in Russia last February, he took time to, “reflect on my background in McKinney and how grateful I am for the support and encouragement from McKinney ISD."
Quinn referenced the law of progression: seed, progress, harvest. He said, “Once I understood that, I began applying it to my life. I realized all I had to do was plant the seed. That's how I became the school’s all-time leading receiver. I carried bags of seed. It didn’t matter how big the other receiver was or who came in with a full scholarship. I was on a quest to work harder and smarter than anyone I was around because that is what successful people do.”
MISD Superintendent, Dr. JD Kennedy, thanked sponsors for their strong sense of community by making the breakfast possible. For the 2013-2014 school year, 223 new professional positions were added. Of those, 19% are new to education. Kennedy encouraged the new teachers to lean on the “great seasoned educators” of the district for support and guidance.
Principals, new teachers and Teachers of the Year were also recognized by Dr. Kennedy and closed the breakfast by saying, “As Mr. Quinn recognized the need to plant seeds for the future. That's what our educators are doing, (they are) planting the seeds of learning.”
