Two new arrivals to the list were Germany and the United Arab Emirates
(PRWEB UK) 23 August 2013
The article, Favourite destinations for Brit expat work and retirement still the same, published 1st August in emigrate.co.uk, explains that the list was drawn from the government’s Department of Work and Pensions and the Institute of Public Policy Research. Retaining its position at the top for the twentieth year is Australia, which currently has 1,062,000 UK expats, 251,000 of whom are drawing a UK pension. The USA came in second with 829,000 former UK residents, 140,000 of whom are retired, with Spain in third position and Canada in fourth. Two new arrivals to the list were Germany, now home to 97,000 Brits (39,000 of which are retirees) and the United Arab Emirates with 65,000 (and only 680 pensioners).
However it is important to note that The Foreign Office states that keeping track of all British expats is “an impossible job.”
Providing international shipping and airfreight to destinations around the world, the team at Interdean were naturally interested to discover where the majority of former UK residents are now living. A representative from the firm explains the common factors that attract people to these locations.
“As the list shows us, most of the favourite destinations are either mainly or largely English speaking countries, such as Australia, the US and Canada. People can explore new surroundings and enjoy better weather without too much of a culture shock. Also with places like Canada and Australia, people look forward to a more relaxed way of life, and shorter working hours.”
