Pharmacists play key role in managing heart failure patients, says Rowlands Online Pharmacy
(PRWEB UK) 15 August 2013 -- A recent assessment noted the importance of pharmacists in their management of heart failure – with their assistance making a noticeable difference to the improvement of quality of life; along with minimising the public health burden associated with the risks of heart failure.
An article published by TeleManagement highlighted the research undertaken of 12 studies, covering more than 2,000 patients – where care offered by a pharmacist was compared to general care. For seven studies, the pharmacist was the central caregiver; while in the remaining studies the pharmacist acted as part of a team.
Despite no overall decrease in mortality with pharmacist involvement, there was a massive reduction in hospitalisation rates by approximately one third – both for heart failure and overall if a pharmacist is involved.
A spokesperson for Rowlands Online Pharmacy commented: “Heart failure is a serious condition contended by millions across the globe – and we’re constantly looking for new ways to combat this issue by testing out a number of alternative remedies. This is a hugely positive step for the health industry, and hopefully we can curb the risks of hospitalisation by supporting the work of our hardworking pharmacists.”
Making up for over a million incidents each year in the United States, this statistic is set to rise – due to complications associated with medication. However, with increased input from the pharmacist (having the most knowledge regarding medication), reduces the chance of hospitalisation.
“Whilst it’s unclear how exactly their intervention benefits heart failure patients, what matters is that their presence has an underlying effect that improves their health,” added the spokesperson
.
“If we can keep the number of hospitalisation rates down to a manageable minimum, this will greatly radicalise the way pharmacists operate. And now we know just how much their contribution matters, this adds weight to the concept that pharmacists should always remain involved in the care of a patient with heart failure.”
