Kaleidoscope, a leading product design and development consultancy, today announced that as part of its initiative to broaden and increase offerings in medical product design, it has named Sean Barnett, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP, to the newly created position of Chief Medical Officer. Barnett brings wide and varied experience in medical innovation, patient care and OR management to his role.
Barnett’s appointment is a vital element in Kaleidoscope’s recent efforts to embed user needs into the innovation and design/development process. As part of Kaleidoscope’s initiative, the company has also expanded its product design and development team, intensified focus on research and consumer insights, and increased emphasis on medical innovation. These efforts will offer medical and health care clientele unprecedented access to clinical expertise in multiple areas of medicine.
“This is an industry first, to have a practicing surgeon join a medical product design and development team. With his experience and unique perspective, we’ll be able to offer medical and healthcare clientele a deeper level of user insights,” said Matt Kornau, CEO of Kaleidoscope.
Barnett’s former roles include staff surgeon at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where he also led the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Innovation Consortium and the OR Equipment and Standards Committee. In addition, he was Assistant Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
“Medical product development is an area of high growth for Kaleidoscope. I’m eager to open up new areas and new avenues for the team,” said Barnett. “As a surgeon and with my background in mechanical engineering and anatomy, I can offer novel user perspectives to Kaleidoscope’s customers not easily found with traditional approaches.”
Sean received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and his MS in Anatomy and Doctor of Medicine from Wright State University. He was a fellow in surgical research and surgical infectious disease fellow at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine during his surgical residency and a pediatric surgery fellow at Cincinnati Children's.
