Spirituality and Recovery Workshop for Young Adults Introduced at Promises West L.A.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 21, 2013 -- Recognizing that addiction recovery is an exercise in mind, body and spirit, Promises West L.A. is giving young adults a unique opportunity to participate in a Spirituality and Recovery Workshop, a powerful workshop that guides them as they explore their spirituality and the role of spirituality in addiction recovery. Incorporating a creative blend of music, meditation, storytelling, ritual and ceremony that is used to support 12-Step recovery, this hands-on workshop creates a setting that allows young adults to have a profound personal transformation.
The workshop is led by Jim Savage, LCDC, an experienced drug and alcohol counselor who has specialized in adolescent substance abuse treatment since 1984. In addition to his clinical skills, Savage is a professional musician, author and producer. He owned his own adolescent outpatient treatment program for 11 years and has produced volumes of recovery-related material, including the rock musical The Journey, the books A Parent’s Guide to Drug Treatment: Rehab Works! and The Recovery Wheel: 12-Step Recovery and The Medicine Wheel, and the documentary The Hero’s Journey: A Storytelling Adventure With Jim Savage. In the 1990s, he starred in the popular Dallas-based Beatles cover band A Hard Night’s Day.
“Spirituality is one of the most important elements of 12-Step recovery, yet in my experience, is an area where we often come up short in helping clients in treatment,” said Savage. “This workshop is a great opportunity for the clients at Promises to have an experience that can make a big impact on their spiritual development and recovery.”
Savage has been helping people explore spirituality in recovery for over 20 years, and is recognized for his unique approach that allows clients to have an “experience,” rather than simply learning about it through books and lectures.
The Spirituality and Recovery workshop is an experiential process that helps young adults:
• Gain a better understanding of the recovery process
• Identify where they are in their own recovery “story”
• Explore their relationship with their Higher Power
• Develop alternative ways of coping with difficult feelings through meditation and mindfulness
• Process unresolved issues
• Bond with their peers through shared experience and self-disclosure
• Develop an enhanced capacity for intuitive thought and inner guidance
• Increase motivation for recovery through spiritual connection
The workshop is divided into two phases that span the first two months of a client’s treatment at Promises. Phase I, “Preparation,” is a two-day intensive that focuses on Steps 1-3 as clients answer the question, “Who am I?” and explore their understanding of a Higher Power. During the month between Phases I and II, clients complete assignments designed to prepare them for letting go of resentments, fears, negative beliefs and unresolved issues. Phase II, “Transformation,” is another two-day intensive that takes clients through a process that relates to Steps 4-7, and culminates in a powerful ceremony that leads to healing and transformation.
From music and storytelling performances to meditation and ceremony, each session combines a variety of creative and healing approaches that engage clients and inspire greater treatment participation. Conducting the workshop as an extended process leads to greater clinical integration and increased overall commitment to treatment.
“Jim’s creative and non-traditional approach makes him uniquely relatable to young people,” said Promises’ Regional Vice President-California Nanci Stockwell, LCSW. “We are so fortunate to have him sharing his many talents with the young people at Promises and contributing in such a meaningful way to their long-term recovery.”
