The North America Office of Duesseldorf Tourism and Duesseldorf Airport Announce: Elektra by Richard Strauss – 3 Performances at Duesseldorf Opera House in September
Düsseldorf, Germany (PRWEB) August 23, 2013 -- More than 100 years after its premiere in 1909, the story of one of the most dysfunctional families in literature still feels relevant and fresh. Under the direction of Christof Nels, Elektra’s quest for revenge following the murder of her father and sister becomes the glorious expression of devastating intensity and psychological abyss that is at the heart of composer Richard Strauss’ opera masterpiece.
The story is set in Greek mythology: Both Elektra’s sister and father, King Agamemnon, are murdered upon his return home from the Trojan War by his wife Klyteaemnestra and her lover. Elektra manages to escape and sets out to avenge her family. Richard Strauss immediately saw powerful opera material in the character’s trajectory of obsession and escalation when he saw it performed as Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s play in Berlin in 1904. Strauss said about his musical piece: “I went to the outer limits of harmony, psychological polyphony, and the susceptibility of contemporary ears.”
The performance is 1 ¾ hours without intermission. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit http://www.operamrhein.de.
