Tom Flummerfelt Wins 3rd Place in Racing The Planet: Iceland 2013
Boston, MA (PRWEB) August 22, 2013 -- Founder and president of MadAthlete.com, Tom Flummerfelt from Winchester, MA has placed 3rd overall in Racing the Planet’s 155 mile 7-day Stage Race in Iceland. The remote course had the 270 competitors from over 50 countries, running on narrow, rocky horse trails, spongy moss & rock, volcanic ash, black sand beaches, lava cliffs, dirt paths, unpaved roads, tall grasses and over mountain passes; all while carrying up a 23 lbs. backpack of food and mandatory gear.
The passionate athlete and devout entrepreneur was excited to see a dramatic improvement from his first Racing the Planet race in Jordan, 2012 when an illness struck on Day 5 and knocked him down from 11th to 25th (out of 140 competitors).
“My 3rd place finish was entirely unexpected. My coach, Pat Wheeler, of QT2 Systems, put together a solid race plan, but neither of us envisioned this degree of success. Fortunately, I executed the race plan well, stayed physically and mentally strong, and managed to climb the overall ranks each day. I would have been very happy with a top ten finish going into the race, but everything clicked,” Tom Flummerfelt said.
Iceland’s weather tormented competitors for almost the entire trail running race.
“I expected cold and rainy conditions, but the intensity and unrelenting nature of the winds were laughable at times. Constant 30+ mph winds were the norm and on one mountain pass, the winds were strong enough to knock some people over,” Tom Flummerfelt said.
With MadAthlete.com being at the forefront of the adventure sports industry, Flummerfelt was well-versed on how to gear up for the event. The athlete thanks Sea to Summit and Salomon, in particular, for making such exceptional, lightweight gear.
Iceland 2013 event was the 6th edition of the Roving Race, sponsored by RACINGTHEPLANET. The Roving Race Series is an annual event which moves to a new location each year. Previous locations included Vietnam, Namibia, Australia, Nepal and Jordan. Iceland 2013 is self-supported, meaning that competitors must carry all their own equipment and food, but are provided with water and a place in a tent each day and are supported by professional medical and operations teams.
