Local Law Firm Sponsors Backpacks for Kids
(PRWEB) August 23, 2013 -- How do you get kids excited about learning? Well, if you begin with face-painting, a DJ, bubbles, crafts and a brand new backpack full of new supplies, that’s probably a good start.
At least that’s what the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin thought when they co-sponsored Backpacks for Kids in Durham Central Park on Saturday, August 10 to help pass out backpacks and school supplies to more than 300 children in low-income families.
According to Farrin attorney Crystal Rouse, who volunteered with her daughter Maanica at the event, this is the firm’s third year as a sponsor for Backpacks for Kids.
“We just really love this event,” Rouse said. “It rains a little every year, but it doesn’t matter to the kids. They’re always so excited and volunteers really made an effort to make the event especially fun this year.”
Backpacks for Kids is a volunteer program that works with Durham County Social Services to identify needy students and the supplies they will need for their specific grade.
Qualifying parents pre-register their child for the event and when they arrive, they receive a colored backpack and cardboard box with handles containing all the supplies for their grade – crayons and markers for the little ones, calculators and protractors for the older ones.
Comina Massey, a parent whose four children received supplies at this year’s event, was quoted in the Saturday, August 10th Herald Sun's article, "Durham families receive free backpacks, school supplies," saying how much events such as Backpacks for Kids prove how much the community cares about people like her.
“It was awesome,” Massy said. “I actually teared up.”
The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin will continue to be involved in events such as these for a long time to come if Shareholder and Social Services Committee President Attorney Tara Williams has anything to do with it.
“We enjoy making ourselves available to help others, and also believe in supporting education. When the two come together in such a practical way, it makes sponsoring an easy decision when we can ,” Williams said. “Who knows - maybe one of those boxes of crayons ended up with a future Durham artist or a future judge.”
