TDS Warns Customers: Don’t Get Caught in Phishing Scam
Madison, WI (PRWEB) August 22, 2013 -- TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS®) has learned that, in the past 24 hours, some customers are receiving scam emails. Known as phishing, the emails are fraudulent attempts to scam customers into providing email addresses and passwords. They suggest that TDS is expanding the customers email quota.
“These emails should be deleted,” said DeAnne Boegli, national communications manager for TDS. “TDS does not conduct business this way. We do not contact customers via email or phone to verify sensitive account information.”
To protect against all phishing attempts, TDS advises customers not to provide confidential information (e.g., passwords, social security numbers, date of birth, etc.) to any request they did not initiate. According to TDS, any emails requesting such data should be deleted immediately.
“Thankfully our customers are smart and did not fall for the scam,” Boegli added. “But we want to make sure everyone remains vigilant to this type of activity.”
TDS also warns that sometimes the emails include links. The email asks customers to click the link and supply the information. While they may look real, oftentimes, the links take customers to a counterfeit website, generate viruses, or install spyware instead. Do not follow any included links.
