Industry events can be a fantastic source of new business, but attendees need to have a focussed plan to fully exploit the opportunities, Kenny Goodman has said in a new Find the Edge article.

He uses his regular Friday slot to explain the benefits networking at relevant business events can offer, and provide some handy tips for anyone looking to make the most of opportunities that present themselves.

Goodman said: “Are you more likely to do business with a stranger who contacts you out of the blue over email, or someone you can look in the eye, shake hands, and discuss your specific needs with?

“The internet’s great, but you just can’t beat a face-to-face chat. This is especially true when generating leads.

“By attending events focussed towards your niche, you can make connections with important people in a way that you just can’t online.”

He goes on to discuss the need to avoid going overboard when socialising at these events, and explain why hiring a stand can be a good business decision.

To really reap the rewards, however, Goodman recommends plucking up the courage to start making speeches at relevant events.

He said: “Speaking at events is one of the best ways to build your reputation as an expert and get your ideas out there – it’s the best business card on the planet.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re currently a bit of an unknown – there’s no harm in asking. Look for people who are organising small seminars or conferences, and get in touch with them offering an angle you don’t think they have covered.

“Most people find public speaking pretty daunting, but it will give you a fantastic platform, and a chance to really engage with your audience and build your credibility.”
