The new process delivers in plain language all of the required elements of a HIPAA IA and then captures and digitizes a telephonic verbal consent.

Pleio is encouraged by the Omnibus Rule issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (“DHHS”) which takes effect on September 23, 2013. In its preliminary commentary to the Rule, DHHS acknowledges the value of Pharmacy-driven medication adherence programs as part of health care treatment and operations under HIPAA. Under the new rule, however, patients must be properly informed when those programs are subsidized and must authorize communications made in connection with the subsidized programs. Pleio has developed and successfully tested a telephonic IA process which meets the legal requirements of HIPAA.
