Reducing energy footprints in data centers

The IT industry is a fast-growing sector with ever increasing demands on energy.

At a time when disastrous effects of global warming and climate change are becoming painfully real, businesses across all industries have to take responsibility for reducing their carbon footprint. With this in mind, Vodien Internet Solutions, one of Singapore’s largest web hosting providers, commits to an environment-friendly operation by changing the way it operates. From these changes, the company aims to reduce its carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency and contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.

The IT industry is a fast-growing sector with ever increasing demands on energy. According to the U.S.’ National Data Center Energy Efficiency Information Program, the energy consumption of data centers alone continues to grow by 12 percent annually. An average data center consumes energy equivalent to that of 25,000 households.

In light of these energy trends, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has also committed to form a Green DC Standards Working Group under the industry-led Information Technology Standards Committee (http://www.itsc.org.sg). The intent is to drive the development of a Singapore Standard for Green DCs, aimed at reducing the energy consumption and operating costs of DCs and enhancing their competitiveness. In line with this vision, Vodien has implemented new energy-efficient hardware and appliances aimed at reducing the total energy consumed.

Vodien is among the first green web hosting providers in Singapore. The company has committed to investing in new generation Dell servers which are 20 percent more energy-efficient than the average servers and have higher performance-per-watt ratio. These servers qualify for the Energy Star specifications sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Defense. Making a conscious decision to acquire energy efficient hardware is an important step towards making company operations greener.

Vodien will also be performing regular upgrades on their infrastructure not only to ensure superior performance but to improve efficiency and reduce energy waste. The company is focused on providing reliable and high quality web hosting services to its clients while also maintaining its strong commitment on environment protection.

Aside from now having an energy-efficient infrastructure, Vodien will also institute policies in day-to-day operations that support the reduce-reuse-recycle campaign. To reduce paper consumption, all bank statements will now be delivered electronically. An electronic, paperless invoicing system has also been developed so that its own customers get electronic statements as well. Whenever hard copies of documents are necessary for administrative purposes, the company uses recycled paper. Packing materials from incoming shipments and other waste are reused and recycled. These simple practices minimize waste while also inculcating an environment-oriented culture within the company.

In integrating environment-friendly principles into its policies and daily operations, Vodien aims to contribute to a national and global shift towards energy efficiency and sustainability.
