Foundation Financial Group Feeds Hungry Children via Blessings in a Backpack
Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) August 28, 2013 -- Foundation Financial Group continues its year-long initiative to help feed school children in need by supporting the Blessings in a Backpack organization. So far, Foundation Financial employees have fed nearly four children for an entire school year.
“It’s tragic how many children in our own communities have no idea when they’ll eat again or where their next meal will come from,” said Foundation Financial Group Event Coordinator Megan Nau. “Blessings in a Backpack makes sure these children have food at home. Well-nourished children score higher on tests and get better grades. Foundation Financial Group is motivated to do our part because no child should go hungry.”
Every FFG office that is located in a city with a local Blessings in a Backpack chapter is participating in the initiative. By recycling aluminum cans, employees in FFG’s Atlanta, Savannah, Jacksonville, Rochester, and Denver offices have able to help feed children in their communities while reinforcing environmentally friendly habits. After employees fill a designated blue recycling bin, a representative from their local Blessings chapter collects the cans. Each full bag of cans generates approximately $6 for the cause.
Blessings in a Backpack sends home a backpack of food for elementary schoolchildren enrolled in the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program. The food is easy-to-prepare or ready-to-eat items such as macaroni and cheese, oatmeal, granola bars, and juice boxes. Backpacks are sent home each weekend.
Over 20 million children in America are at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger negatively impact child development. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Foundation Financial Group’s contributions to Blessings in a Backpack will send meals home to children from the Atlanta Public School System (Atlanta, GA); Brunswick Public School System (Savannah, GA); Duval Public School System (Jacksonville, FL); Greene Central School District (Rochester, NY); and Denver Public School System (Denver, CO).
Blessings in a Backpack is a non-profit organization currently feeding nearly 62,000 children in 437 schools across 42 states. Blessings also feeds hungry children in Canada, Columbia, and Haiti. The program is a hybrid of private sector funding and public partnership carried out in public schools. Blessings is feeding the future of America, one school at a time.
