Etymotic Celebrates 30 Years of High-Fidelity, Hearing Health and Wellness
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 26, 2013 -- Professor, scientist, inventor, choir director and musician Mead Killion, Ph.D. founded Etymotic Research, Inc. in 1983 and remains active as Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of the Board. During this milestone year, the company has released “The Bean”, a revolutionary, affordable personal sound amplifier available without prescription or medical referral, a new Home Hearing Test, a new, smaller form factor for its unique line of electronic ear plugs and new colorful versions of its high quality ETY·Kids® Safe-Listening Earphones.
Over the past 30 years, the company has designed products that accurately assess hearing, improve the lives of those with hearing loss, protect hearing, and enhance the listening experience of musicians and music lovers everywhere.
Etymotic invented insert earphones in 1984. The first versions were used for diagnostic testing and precision auditory research. Etymotic produced the first noise-isolating, high-fidelity in-ear consumer earphone, the ER-4 in 1991, which became the model for all subsequent noise-excluding in-ear earphones and in-ear monitors worldwide, and created an entire category of consumer electronics. The ER-4 earphones are still produced and channel-balanced to within 1 dB in Etymotic's labs in the U.S. Working together, Etymotic’s engineers, audiologists and musicians have generated over 100 patents issued and pending.
“As more and more listening is done away from the quiet of home and concert hall, most listeners turn up the volume to overcome the background noise which arrives nearly unattenuated at their ears,” said Dr. Killion. “Listening to sound at high levels and for prolonged periods can lead to hearing loss, which is cumulative and irreversible. A noisier world, coupled with personal listening devices, has created a hazard that may not reveal itself for decades. We believe we have helped save more than 10 million ears with our HiFi earplugs and noise-isolating earphones. The products we have introduced in this 30th anniversary year continue our mission to preserve hearing.”
