It's imperative for pet owners to know that we now offer a variety of solutions to decrease anxiety and increase the safety and well-being of our pets.

Late summer and early fall has notoriously been known as a time of year when hurricanes, tropical storms and unpredictable meteorological conditions occur, especially in areas along the coastal United States. Thunder, rain and high winds trigger anxiety and stress in household pets, which is why ThunderWorks, the makers of the ThunderShirt, ThunderToy and ThunderTreat and more calming solutions is reminding all pet owners that there are simple solutions and steps that can combat summer storm-related pet anxiety.

“The 2012 storm season was extremely active, with the third most named storms to date,” said Phil Blizzard, founder of ThunderShirt. “For 2013, it’s imperative for pet owners to know that we now offer a variety of solutions to decrease anxiety and increase the safety and well-being of our pets.”

Since 2009, the ThunderShirt has been reducing anxiety among hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats around the world. The company has conducted extensive research on the prevalence and effects of pet anxiety, particularly related to storm season. With its patented design, ThunderShirt’s gentle, constant pressure has a dramatic calming effect for dogs and cats if they are anxious or fearful. Anxiety experts believe that pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system and may release calming hormones like endorphins or oxytocins.

The new ThunderToy and ThunderTreat by ThunderWorks is a thoughtfully designed fillable chew toy and calming treat combination that helps calm and distract stressed or anxious dogs, for example during storms, travel or separation from families.

“Two of the most common negative behaviors reported when a dog is stressed or anxious are problem chewing, often causing destruction, and uncontrollable barking,” Blizzard said. “Our new ThunderToy and ThunderTreats were created to help solve those two problems directly, naturally and effectively. And they are a great compliment to our ThunderShirt’s calming benefits.”

The ThunderToy is available in two sizes, small and large, and retails for $12.95 and $14.95. The ThunderTreat is available in 4oz. ($7.95 MSRP) and 8oz. ($9.95 MSRP). The ThunderTreat is made to fit inside the ThunderToy, and includes proven calming ingredients such as chamomile and lavender. The treats are also wheat, corn and soy free, and Made in the USA.

ThunderShirt provides tips to keep in mind, should a hurricane or tropical storm hit.

  •     Keep pets inside and monitor them when the go out for bathroom breaks, at times, storms can spook pets into running away.
  •     Photograph each pet and store these pictures with other important documents in sealed/waterproof plastic bags.
  •     Make sure that your pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations. Boarding kennels typically require proof of current vaccinations.
  •     During a storm, you can play pet-friendly, classical music, or even run a load of dishes or laundry. The calming or familiar noise may be relaxing to your pets.
  •     Also, have your pets’ favorite toy, blanket and/or bed nearby during a severe storm.
  •     Try not to scold a scare pet as it may confuse them and reinforce fearful behaviors.
