Adult Essentials is a Proud Sponsor of the Island Girl Race Half Marathon and 5K and Women Runners Everywhere
Burlington, Ontario (PRWEB) August 29, 2013 -- Adult Essentials is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the Island Girl half marathon and 5K for women. Taking place September 22nd in Toronto, the Island Girl event is a half marathon, a half marathon relay and a 5K with a uniquely tropical twist.
The “for women, in celebration of women” event is designed to encourage women to get out and participate in running events. The Caribbean-styled running and walking event takes runners through a fast, scenic course on Toronto Island back to a tropical holiday inspired finish line complete with steel drums, grass skirts and tropical fruit.
“Entering our 5th year, Island Girl promises a fun, lively race experience for the increasing number of female participants in running and walking events,” says Tara Melville, co-Race Director of the Island Girl Half Marathon. “Sharing the experience with your mom, sister or friend adds to the personal satisfaction that comes with completing an event and ultimately leads to a healthier lifestyle.”
A women-only running event is the perfect place for LSN to introduce their new Adult Essentials Multi-Vitamin Gummies for Women to their prime target audience: women athletes. Ongoing research into proper nutrition for athletes raises concerns for female athletes in particular.
“We make products to improve overall health, including supplements for women, and eating well and staying active is a big part of that,” says Life Science Nutritionals (LSN) Social Media Manager, Deb Lowther, who has run many half marathons and recently completed her first Half Ironman Triathlon. "We don't just sponsor events, but we do our best to get out and participate as well. It is important for us as a family to encourage healthy living by example."
The physical demands of training puts extra strain on women athletes, especially amateur athletes since their bodies typically have had less time to adapt to the demands of training. Female distance runners are at risk of stress fractures, anemia, osteoporosis, and the female athlete triad (low energy, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis) as the result of inadequate vitamin and mineral intake.
Vitamins and minerals play an important role in supporting women athletes, helping with energy production, bone maintenance, muscle tissue repair, hemoglobin synthesis, immune system function and protection against oxidative damage.
Health experts recommend that female athletes pay particular attention to calcium, vitamin D, iron, zinc, magnesium, the B vitamins and antioxidants such as vitamins C and E as these nutrients are especially needed and often deficient as the result of intense training.
“It is not always easy to find time to fit in training for a long distance running event while juggling work and kids, but being active and able to enjoy a healthy family lifestyle makes it all worthwhile,” says Lowther, who will be running in the Island Girl Half Marathon. “Island Girl is one of my favorites. The Island is gorgeous, the course flat, the scenery is breathtaking, and my family loves coming to cheer me on."
