According to the recent BBC News report dated 22 August 2013: Burglars take Manchester pensioner’s life savings, Mr Phillip Knowles had £22,000 life savings stolen from his home. The 81 year old, who had been saving since the age of seven, found men in his house on returning from a shopping trip. The men told him they were from the police but they were not wearing uniforms. Police believe that Mr Knowles had been targeted by the men and are appealing to anyone who has information about the crime.

The BBC News report goes on to say that police believe the men broke into the pensioner's house via the front door as there were signs the lock had been forced.

Det Con Lisa McGrane said: “In the blink of an eye, his entire life savings have been cruelly snatched away and he is quite understandably very shaken and very upset.”

Detectives at Private Detectives Manchester believes that this incident may not have happened if Mr Knowles had properly protected his home against burglars and other criminals. Detectives at Private Detective Manchester offer security devices and systems, such as burglar alarms, motion sensor devices and CCTV systems. Colin Ward, Chief Investigator from Private Detectives Manchester said: "The presence of these devices can deter a burglar from choosing your home to target. These devices and other security information could have been given to Mr Knowles, by our detectives and he would also have been advised to safeguard his life savings in a bank or building society."
Many older people do not put their trust in banks or building societies, they often chose to hide their money around their homes. Experienced burglars know that this is what elderly people do and see them as an easy target, especially those pensioners who appear to be well off."

Colin Wade from Private Detectives Manchester goes on to say "Our detectives also fit hidden safes that can be used to keep cash and other valuables safe. This service is often a preferable option to most of the elderly clients we deal with.”
