HearthSong, a leading online and catalog toy brand, has launched a new program called HearthSong Heroes. The company wants to bring recognition to kids who are leading programs that help other kids. Beverly Fries, Vice President of Merchandising for the brand, says, “We know there are amazing children who are doing what they can to improve the lives of other children. We wanted to find a way to bring attention to their efforts and potentially help them achieve their goals.” The Heroes program invites nominations of kids through their website and Heroes will be selected by an internal committee once a quarter. Some of those Heroes will be assisted in their projects with cash donations from HearthSong.
As inspiration for the program, HearthSong chose four local kids in the central Virginia area and has profiled their stories in a short documentary and on their website. As a senior in high school, Rachel worked with schools to provide quality outdoor time for kids, and recently held a screening of the file Play Again, a moving and humorous documentary that takes six "average American" teenagers (who spend five to fifteen hours a day in front of digital screens) on their first wilderness adventure. Jimmy and Badham believe passionately that, as Badham says, "Every other person in this world should have the same opportunities as we do, no matter what." They raised enough money not only to help build a school in Sierre Leone, in cooperation with the Free the Children organization, but have also provided a precious water source for the entire community to use. And Mary Kate wants very much for all children to have a happy Christmas morning. She has worked with her school and with the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program for the past few years to raise the funds (and wrap the presents) that will help kids have a better Christmas morning.
