Probing the issue of obesity in America, a recent AmeriQuest blog article finds that this and other alarming statistics are contributing to an early mortality rate for today’s commercial truck drivers.

Although the life expectancy for the general male public is age 77, the life expectancy for a truck driver is only 61. In addition, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the JOEM (Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine), the obesity rate for truck drivers is 50 percent. Compared to the general population suffering from hypertension or pre-hypertension (58.3 percent), the truck driver’s experience is much higher (87 percent). Much of the stress and obesity results from an atmosphere where drivers are being pushed to deliver product to its destination in a shorter time frame.

The blog, authored by COO of CURE Leasing & Maintenance, Brett Petersen, also lists a number of ways companies and fleets are dealing with these numbers, from stationing nurses at facilities to offering financial incentives for weight loss, and much more. In addition, Petersen lists a variety of Websites that offer health and wellness information specifically for truck drivers. They are also encouraging drivers and fleet managers to contribute their own stories and experiences on this important topic.
