Educating the next generation of workers is critical to sustaining the mining industry. The Doe Run Company recently donated $40,000 to Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., to provide innovative, practical learning opportunities for future mining engineers.

The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) recently donated $40,000 to Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla, Mo., to provide innovative, practical learning opportunities for Missouri’s future mining engineers. The funding will support construction of a new Mining Survey Laboratory, which will feature GPS systems, total stations, and data loggers to teach students how to measure, calculate and map relative geometric advances, material volumes and target definitions for mine planning in surface and underground mines.

“Mining plays a significant role in our local workforce and economy, and is expected to add 11,000 jobs in the U.S. in the next two decades,” said Jerry Pyatt, president and CEO of Doe Run. “Educating students who will become our skilled scientists and engineers is critical to sustaining the industry. By investing in quality institutions, like Missouri S&T, we’re able to continue providing the mineral and metal resources we use in everyday products that provide power, protection and convenience.”

This gift, which brings the total industry funding for the facility to $215,000, is part of Doe Run’s long-standing relationship with Missouri S&T, the alma mater for many Doe Run employees. The company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO), located about one hour from the university’s campus, frequently provides Missouri S&T students with first-hand experience as participants in the university’s Explosives Camp, educational tours and as summer interns.

“Doe Run has been a strong supporter of Missouri S&T’s efforts in educating world-class mining engineers,” says Dr. Samuel Frimpong, professor and Robert H. Quenon chair of the department of mining and nuclear engineering at Missouri S&T. “This donation provides additional funding towards our goal of $350,000 for the state-of-the-art Mining Survey Facility, which will be located in McNutt Hall.”

Doe Run previously contributed $250,000 to build Missouri S&T’s Experimental Mine building and has also sponsored several of Missouri S&T’s Innovations in Mining Engineering conferences. This year, Pyatt is a keynote speaker at the conference to be held September 9 – 12 in St. Louis.

Doe Run also supports scholarships at Missouri S&T and Mineral Area College and provides hands-on experience for future professionals through its internship program.
