The Southwest Florida Water Management District shows that sinkholes can threaten fresh water supplies by draining water from lakes, wetlands, and streams. To make matters even worse, The U.S. Geological Survey ( USGS ) is discontinuing operation on a large number of stream gages that monitor Aquifer water levels due to budget cuts as a result of Sequestration. Stream gages are used nationwide in the Aquifer systems to predict drought conditions. The State of Florida was one of the most affected by this as seen on the map.
Drought & fresh water scarcity across the US is becoming a bigger challenge every year. This is why cities nationwide have drought conditions and water restrictions every summer. It is obvious that there is a water shortage when waste water treatment companies need to treat toilet water and dump it back into the Aquifers.
