The U.S. Open, held each year from Queens, N.Y. at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, this tournament brings the greatest athletes in the sport to the city for volleys and serves that leave spectators in awe. There were already some major highlights to the event including wins from some of the best before Mother Nature got involved.
Day one of the U.S. Open kicked off with some of the greatest in the sport taking to the courts. Second seeded Rafael Nadal, the 12-time Grand Slam event winner easily advanced through his first round opponent Ryan Harrison in straight sets. Nadal is looking to win the U.S. Open for just the second time in his career.
David Ferrer, the fourth seed in the 2013 U.S. Open got a bit of a tougher fight from his opponent, Nick Krygios, but still advanced in straight sets. While Serena is still at the top of her game, her sister, Venus Williams has dropped a bit in the world rankings to 36th. Williams, unranked at the U.S. Open this year pulled off the biggest upset on the women's side of things on day one, knocking off the 11th seeded Kirsten Flipkens. Williams is looking to win her third U.S. Open and 10th Grand Slam overall. It would be her first since 2008 when she won Wimbledon.
In other notable women's action, 2011 French Open champion Li Na advanced to the second round with a straight set win against Olga Govortsova. Agnieszka Radwanska, the third seed from Poland had an easy go in her first round match, also winning in straight sets, beating Silvia Soler-Espinosa. Former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic also advanced to the second round with her straight set win against Madison Keys.
