Columbia University Study Shows More Premature Deaths from Obesity Than Believed
Vienna, VA (PRWEB) August 29, 2013 -- There are a significantly higher number of premature deaths from obesity related causes than researchers thought, according to a new Columbia University study. The study is discussed in an article entitled, “Obesity’s death toll could be higher than believed, says study,” (http://www.latimes.com/science/la-sci-obesity-20130816,0,1789948.story) from the Los Angeles Times, published on August 15, 2013. The results of the study were published in the American Journal of Public Health this past Thursday.
Previously, researchers had believed that the amount of premature deaths that could be attributed to what the article calls “excess body mass” were around 5%, but the study discovered that between 1986 and 2006, the number was actually closer to 18.2% - roughly four times higher than widely believed in the medical community before now.
The study leader, Ryan K. Masters, warns that unless significant changes take place, “obesity is going to account for a rising share of mortality.” Masters says the study points out evidence that those most at risk are those who were overweight or obese as children in the 1970s and 1980s and have struggled with excess weight over the course of their lives.
Rates varied by race and gender. African American women were most likely to die prematurely from excess weight, with 26.8% of premature deaths attributed to that cause, followed by Caucasian women at 21.7%, Caucasian men at 15.6% and African American men at 5%.
The study’s authors believe that obesity epidemic may actually reduce the population’s lifespan for some years to come, and actually reverse the increasing life expectancies for a younger generation.
