Gallery Brooklyn presents, Kerstin Roolfs - Zeitgeber, September 7 - October 19, 2013
Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) August 31, 2013 -- Kerstin Roolfs is a German-born artist who has been living and working in Brooklyn for two decades. Her new book, New York II. Decade, features a selection of her artwork from the last 10 years. The opening of her solo show Zeitgeber at Gallery Brooklyn in Red Hook on September 14 will coincide with the release of the new book.
Zeitgeber, a term used in chronobiology, literally means time-giver and refers to the external cues which influence our internal clocks. Social interactions, mind altering drugs, exercise, eating and drinking patterns, light and temperature are all Zeitgebers, and are the subjects of Kerstin Roolfs’ paintings, drawings and prints. Roolfs' recent work has been described, by Katy Hamer, as "large scale paintings, densely layered with drawings in oil paint...her subjects range from her dogs, a male figure sporting a moustache and swim goggles and a large pink mouth, slightly parted...it is almost as if the print making process has influenced her work on canvas, as multiple images are repeated, as if stamped yet altered ever so slightly, black on white and sometimes color in a washy layer of paint.’
The solo show is part wall installation-- one of Roolfs’ favorite display forms-- consisting of woodcuts and linocuts printed on surprising objects such as coffee bean bags and a wooden casket. New paintings will rotate into the gallery midway through the exhibition, so there will be a second opening on October 5.
Enjoy the artwork and some impromptu musical performances at Gallery Brooklyn on September 14 and October 5 from 6-9pm.
