According to the BBC News Africa report dated 26th August 2013: Kenyan trio in ‘wife-sharing’ deal, a Kenyan woman could not chose between two men she was having an affair with, for more than four years so the two men have decided to both marry her. The agreement will go ahead if they can prove polyandry (a woman having more than one husband) was part of their custom. The trio have a rota of when each of the men stay with the wife at her home and boundaries have been set to keep the peace.
This is an unusual case, especially for those in the UK and US where bigamy is against the law. Both men seem happy with the situation and have agreed to live peacefully.
Kenyan family lawyer Judy Thongori said:
"The laws we have do not talk about it but for such a union to be recognised in Kenya, it has to be either under the statutory law or as customary marriage. The question we should ask now is whether these people come from communities that have been practising polyandry,"
