NewVo Beauty, an online beauty supply store, recaps the top 5 ways to combat helmet hair.

According to a Gothamist article published on August 28th, titled “5 Solutions for Cyclist Helmet Hair,” useful tips to help solve the issue of helmet hair are few and far between. Author Lauren Evans shares 5 of the best ways to battle helmet hair.

  •     Bangs - If you have flat bangs, a helmet can actually help the look of your hair. Those who have wispy bangs should use a dry shampoo and work it into the roots to help get that soft look back into your hair.
  •     Long hair - The best option for those who have long hair is to tie it back in a French braid. Avoid regular braids, which expose the top of the head to the helmet and will result in flat hair. Let hair loose from the braid once you have taken off your helmet. If you sweat, Evans advises not to worry. “Sweat is no problem, because it will only serve to make your hair wavier, and therefore, beachier.”
  •     Short Hair - Make sure to add a product to hair and ‘froof.’ Next, secure hair on top of your head before using a helmet. After removing the helmet, ‘froof’ hair again and add a dry shampoo.
  •     Thin hair - Use a sea salt texturizing spray when you are finished riding. This will add texture to flat hair. You can also scrunch the product into your hair for better results.
  •     Thick hair - Scrunching and adding products to hair, like a texturizing spray, will not help if you have thick hair. Instead, use a dry shampoo and make sure to thoroughly brush out your hair.

Sara Greenstone, a representative for online beauty supply store NewVo Beauty, says that mastering helmet hair is no easy task. “Bike commuters have it hard when it comes to maintaining a great hairstyle because using blow dryers and flat irons is not always an option after a ride,” she says. “Leave-in products work best for bike riders. Also, make sure to add a little extra volume to your hair so that it doesn’t appear flat when you take your helmet off.”
