Announcement: GuitarControl.com Releases Part 2 of Popular Jazz Lesson Series
New York, NY (PRWEB) August 31, 2013 -- In the lesson, Guitar Control instructor and professional jazz guitarist Jon MacLennan delves deeper into the theory behind the common-tone technique, using a new example to drive home the wide variety of jazz chords that can be played in this way.
By leading guitarists through the jazz chords one by one, MacLennan demonstrates not only how to play unique jazz chords, but how to use them to maximum effect. MacLennan describes the shape of each chord in the progression, and shows guitarists where to place their fingers to form the chords and how to strum to get a rich jazz sound while maintaining the common note.
In Part 1 of the video, still available, MacLennan introduces the common-tone technique by playing a simple progression using jazz chord voicings in which each chord shares a common note. This technique, MacLennan explains, is best used for ending songs. Ending a tune playing jazz chords that share a common note is effective at signaling the end of a song or a turnaround because of the repletion listeners hear even as the chords change. As opposed to more traditional major or minor chords, guitarists can achieve jazzy, unique sound and set their playing apart by using the jazz voicings shown in the lesson.
A Los Angeles-based session guitarist and composer, Guitar Control instructor Jon MacLennan earned a degree in ethnomusicology and jazz guitar studies from the University of California, and worked as an instructor for the Los Angeles Pierce College Department of Music. An accomplished jazz guitarist, MacLennan recorded guitar and ukulele for the hit Fox show Raising Hope; appeared on the Disney series The Suite life of Zach and Cody; and has composed, arranged, and produced three full length albums of his own.
MacLennan designed the Fast Track Guitar System, a 3-disc instructional DVD available through Guitar Control. In the Fast Track Guitar System, he expands on the basics covered in the YouTube video to teach advanced techniques for playing jazz, blues, rock, folk, and many well known guitar anthems.
