Approximately 70 percent of local consumers search online when they are looking to purchase goods and services. Some of the highest searches include restaurants, hotels, and local stores. However, many searches are done for all other sorts of local businesses including dry cleaners, landscapers, home improvement contractors, painters, and caterers. For the owner of a local business, this means that more than half of the potential customers are actively seeking information regarding their business online. The key takeaway here being that a local business needs to be listed in local directories online including Google Places, Yelp, and Yahoo Local.

People are allowing online reviews to help influence their decision on where to spend their money. It is better to have more reviews, because those potential local customers like to read up to 10 reviews. This most likely means that there will be incremental increases in leads generated from online reviews as local companies begin to build up the number of reviews they have available over time.
The first way to help grow online reviews for local businesses is to provide superior service. One of the key factors people are looking for is reliability. Other important factors include friendliness of the staff, providing a unique experience, and price. It may come as a surprise, but almost half of those surveyed will be more likely to recommend a business or leave a positive review if there is a good special offer going on.
