Bellucci Premium, a producer of top quality European extra virgin olive oil, reacts to an article that explains how the consumption of extra virgin olive oil can help in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

According to an August 29th article from The Olive Oil Times titled “Extra Virgin Olive Oil May Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease,” the polyphenols found in olive oil may prevent the occurrence Alzheimer’s.

Researchers at the University of Florence conducted the study, which was published in PLOS One. The study included the use of mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. One group of mice was given the polyphenol oleuropein aglycone. This polyphenol is found in extra virgin olive oil. After 8 weeks, there was a measurable difference in the cognitive functions of these mice when compared to the mice that were not given the polyphenol.

The results of memory performance tests also showed measurable results for the mice that were given the polyphenol. The scientists noted that “cognitive impairment was completely prevented by oleuropein aglycone administration to the mice.”

The article states that although this is “not the first time that olive oil and the Mediterranean diet appear to protect from Alzheimer’s, this research adds more evidence that, at least in part, these benefits can be traced back to the intake of extra virgin olive oil and its main polyphenol, oleuropein aglycone.”

Natalie Sexenian, marketing manager for Bellucci Premium, is happy to see further research into the claim that extra virgin olive oil helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease. “It is always good to see that new research on the effects of extra virgin olive oil is being conducted,” she says. “The more research done, the more evidence there is that extra virgin olive oil and the Mediterranean diet help improve overall health and wellness.”

Bellucci offers three different types of oil, including an organic option, with a mild peppery flavor and fruity undertones that will satisfy any palate.
