Tamils for Obama Praises UN Human Rights Commissioner for Her Honest Account of her Trip to Sri Lanka
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 27, 2013 -- Tamils for Obama wrote a letter to Ms. Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and praised her for her honest and firm accounts of Tamils suffering and the GOSL's harsh and undemocratic behavior.
Tamils for Obama said in their letter "We read accounts of your recent trip to Sri Lanka. The accounts came from a wide variety of media. BBC News Asia (UN's Navi Pillay attacks Sri Lanka human rights record, 31 August 2013) said that you had 'sharply criticized the government of Sri Lanka' and the BBC's Imogen Foulkes reported that 'the statement issued by Ms Pillay's office is astonishingly blunt, and parts of it will not go down well with the Sri Lankan government.'"
The Tamil American group then praised Ms. Pillay for her direct approach. The letter went on "You were straight-forward and honest. You did not bow to the conventions of diplomacy, which would have made everything you said sound soft and fuzzy, and no one, including the evil-doers, would have been offended by your report. This is what we think most of the diplomats at the UN would have done, and we praise you for giving a clear statement at the end of your trip to Sri Lanka. We say 'Well done, Ms. Pillay.'"
Tamils for Obama then described what they hoped she would do in the future. In their letter they wrote "We hope that you will continue to speak truthfully and forcefully about what has happened and continues to happen in Sri Lanka. We still hope that an international investigation into the Sri Lankan outrages will take place and that the guilty parties will be identified and held accountable. You have called for such an investigation, and we applaud your proposal. We think that the kind of atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan government will happen again and again elsewhere in the world if the evil-doers are not exposed."
Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. They believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan civil war. They have also watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Singhalese victors after the war, and strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.
