Alfonso Ribeiro Discusses Nepotism in Hollywood and Why He Thinks Will Smith Is a Good Parent on AfterBuzz TV
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 03, 2013 -- Alfonso Ribeiro, best known for his portrayal of Carlton on “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, made an appearance on AfterBuzz TV's in-depth interview show Chatting with Cathy, Friday afternoon. In his appearance, Ribeiro talks about nepotism in Hollywood and why he appreciates the Kardashian's business mentality.
Ribeiro's 10-year-old daughter Sierra, focuses on gymnastics, but when asked if she'll ever pursue a career in the entertainment industry, he says, “She has [expressed interest]...she's wonderfully talented. She sings, she plays piano, she dances...[Being in this industry] really is tough work. When she's come to set and watched me direct, especially on Shake It Up, she's like, 'Wow! This is actually a lot of work.' You get told no more often than yes, in this business and a lot of people are not ready for that.”
Many people both in the entertainment industry and viewing it from the outside believe there to be nepotism with many child stars, from Miley Cyrus to Kate Husdon, says Ribeiro. “How many kids of entertainers end up being famous? How many executives end up running their father's or their mother's business? Do we look at that and say, 'That's wrong. Why should he have that opportunity to run his parent's business?' We don't do that,” says Ribeiro, “What we do is we talk about it when it's in show business. We talk about Jaden Smith, because Will Smith is pushing Jaden Smith on the world...It's not Jaden's fault that he was born into that family. But actually, Jaden is talented. Right? So, why not give this kid his opportunity.”
In addition to giving his thoughts on child stars, Ribeiro discusses his thoughts on today's reality TV celebrities. “Celebrity in this decade isn't celebrity in the 80s. It's not based in anything...and no disrespect to the Kardashian's or to Paris Hilton, they're famous for being famous. They're not famous because they actually have a specific talent. Their talent is they have this personality and they're willing to put it out there,” he says, “I actually co-hosted with Kris Jenner a few weeks ago. I don't look at what the [Kardashian's] are doing as a negative. More power to them. If they're creating success to their family and their children and their children's children, good for them. Why is that wrong?...People get upset because they think, 'Well they're messing up my life.' No, just keep doing what you're doing.”
In the interview, Ribeiro tells how he transitioned from acting to hosting and his new game show, Spellmageddon. Ribeiro says the spelling challenges on his show are far from easy. “I could never be a contestant on my own show,” he jokes.
Ribeiro's show, Spellmageddon airs on ABC Family, Wednesday nights.
